Mr
Allcock brought along a variety of pastel papers for members
to try out a range of chalk and oil pastels.
Papers
with some "tooth" need to be used to grab the
pastel. Rough cartridge or watercolour papers can be used.
Specialist white and coloured papers included Ingres pastel,
Canson Mi-Teintes, Hahnemuhle Pastell. The Hanhemuhle Velour
(a pile fabric) did not hold the chalk well.
Pastel
sticks come in a variety of forms including soft, hard,round,square.
Brands: Faber-Castell, Rembrand, Rowney, Toison D'Or, Inscribe,
Sennelier.
He
illustrated ways of applying marks to the paper and combining
colours. He also showed the combination of pastels with
watercolour, charcoal. Grounds included gesso and acrylics.
