An illustration of pastel materials to members by John Allcock

Mr Allcock brought along a variety of pastel papers for members to try out a range of chalk and oil pastels.

Papers with some "tooth" need to be used to grab the pastel. Rough cartridge or watercolour papers can be used. Specialist white and coloured papers included Ingres pastel, Canson Mi-Teintes, Hahnemuhle Pastell. The Hanhemuhle Velour (a pile fabric) did not hold the chalk well.

Pastel sticks come in a variety of forms including soft, hard, round, square. Brands: Faber-Castell, Rembrand, Rowney, Toison D'Or, Inscribe, Sennelier.

He illustrated ways of applying marks to the paper and combining colours. He also showed the combination of pastels with watercolour, charcoal. Grounds included gesso and acrylics.

A few examples of his work are shown on the next pages and on his website www.artbyallcock.co.uk
